Abstract: The educational method of María Montessori, known to everyone as “la dottoressa”, represented a true
revolution in pedagogy in schools, first in her country and later in practically the entire world. Although
today the ideas she proposed may be considered obvious and simple, her proposal represented a
revolutionary change in her time, which generated strong rejection among the most conservative
educational environments. Her legacy, which endures over time, continues to inspire educators around
the world who continue to pursue inclusive education focused on integral development. Graduated in
Medicine in 1896, but a lover of all sciences and, above all, of pedagogy, this woman soon dedicated
herself to spreading her ideas about how the education and training of three-year-old children should
be carried out, later moving on to throughout her life to those intended for any age in general. The
main objective of this article is to highlight her life and work, which has given rise to an immense
number of educational centers that bear her name in all countries. A brief description of the main
characteristics of her teaching method is also shown.
