Abstract: This study investigates and analyzes the characteristics of substitution in reading texts from the Grade
5 Vietnamese textbook (Canh Dieu series). Drawing on the theoretical framework of textual cohesion,
along with contributions from Vietnamese scholars such as Diep Quang Ban and Tran Ngoc Them,
the study employs both quantitative and qualitative methods to identify, classify, and to identify,
classify, and analyze 250 instances of substitution in the corpus.
The findings reveal that pronominal substitution overwhelmingly predominates over synonymous
substitution, with personal pronouns emerging as the most frequently employed forms. Although less
frequent, synonymous substitution demonstrates notable expressive value and contributes to the
enrichment of textual meaning.
The study provides further insights into cohesive mechanisms in instructional texts and offers
pedagogical implications for the teaching of reading comprehension at the primary education level. |
